Eye Surgery in South Korea

Beautiful eyes come in all shapes, sizes, and colors. Cosmetic eye surgery is the most popular plastic surgery procedure in South Korea, with nearly half of the population undergoing some sort of procedure. This type of trust in the capability of plastic surgeons clearly demonstrates that South Korea is one of the best destinations to have cosmetic eye surgery.

With a broad range of different cosmetic eye surgeries, Shin Medical offers something for everyone. Ptosis, also known as “droopy eye”, can be corrected with a simple blepharoplasty to make the eye look bigger. The “Love Band” procedure will give you that cute look, and epicanthoplasty can remove the flap in your inner eye that frequently causes vision obstruction. Regardless of the reason you want to have a procedure, we guarantee the best services and results!

Double Eyelid Surgery

Double Eyelid Surgery (DES) is a very popular procedure, whereby a surgeon creates a crease in the eyelid in order to make the eyes appear as if they have a double fold. Some individuals have visible eyelid creases, known as double eyelid, and some were born without eyelid creases. An eyelid without a crease is called a single lid or “monolid.” There is nothing inherently wrong with either eyelid type, except for in some rare cases where the eyelid might be interfering with your vision. Most people decide to get surgery on their eyelids do so purely for aesthetic reasons. Matching a single eyelid with a double eyelid or giving the eyes a larger appearance are some common reasons for pursuing double eyelid surgery. There are two methods used for these cases:

Incisional

A line will be carefully measured and marked out on the eyelid. After administering anesthesia, the surgeon will make tiny incisions along the double eyelid line. Some skin, muscle, and fat tissue will be removed between the incisions. Then, the cuts will be glued or stitched. This is the preferable technique if you have thick skin and desire a more permanent result.

Non-incisional

A double eyelid can also be created without an incision. In this case, as with the incisional procedure, the eyelid will be meticulously measured and marked out on the eyelid. After this, a group of tiny punctures are made along the line of the skin. Sutures are placed through the punctures and tightened until they form the desired fold. The sutures will remain hidden beneath the skin. The non-incisional technique is a good alternative for those who need a small amount of skin and fat removed, or desire a more temporary procedure.

Mongolian Flap (Epicanthoplasty)

Epicanthoplasty, or “Mongolian fold correction”, is a kind of eye surgery that elongates the inner part of the eye, which makes them appear larger. This fold, starting from the corner of the eye, forms a web-like flap that gives the eye a smaller presentation and sometimes exhausted.

The surgeon will make pre-planned incisions around the corner of the eye. Through these incisions, the surgeon will restructure the shape of the inner eyelid and remove excess skin. After the eye corner is successfully opened, the area is delicately sutured to close the open skin folds.

Lateral Canthoplasty (Outer Eyelid)

This procedure is used to correct small and saggy eyes by changing the shape of the eye on the outside, giving the eye appearance of a larger and more youthful. This is done by tightening the muscles or ligaments that support the outer corners of the eyelid. Canthoplasty is performed at the outer corner of the eye, in the section where the upper and lower eyelids meet.

Love Band

The highly popular Love Band surgery, or as it is called in Korean, “cute fat”, is a very popular procedure in both South Korea and East Asia. This look is achieved by having either filler or fat injected into the tear duct of the lower eyelid. The filler procedure is relatively easy and effects are visible immediately after the procedure. Fat is an alternative method, but is semi-permanent compared to filler.

Droopy Eye (Ptosis)

Ptosis is a condition that causes the upper eyelid to droop because of weak muscles in the eyelid. For individuals who have Ptosis, the condition tends to be exacerbated when you are tired or stressed. Ptosis can reduce your vision and has been known to cause discomfort in the eye. Unbalanced eyes due to Ptosis also cause asymmetry of your face, which leads to the face being less aesthetically pleasing.

During Ptosis correction (known as: upper blepharoplasty), the surgeon will make an incision in the upper eyelid and remove fat from the area. After that, the eyelid muscle will be lifted and sutured. This allows more surface exposure of the eye. Patients tend to prefer double eyelid surgery in tandem with Ptosis correction.

Lower Blepharoplasty

As we get older, our skin starts to lose its natural elasticity. This creates deposits of fat and extra skin that cause discoloration of the lower eyelid, commonly known as dark circles. As you age, the muscles around your eyes also begin to weaken, and this causes the bottom eyelid to droop. This droop can cause impaired peripheral vision and discomfort on the white section of your eye.

To remedy this problem, doctors will recommend a Lower Blepharoplasty Procedure:

  1. The skin under the eye will be incised around 3mm below the lashes
  2. Fat and excess skin is then removed or repositioned to give the eye a more rounded, even look
  3. The incision is sutured along the fold of the eye, making any scarring unnoticeable

FAQ Eye Surgery

There are 2 types of double eyelid surgery, incisional and non-incisional surgery.

Incisional method surgery will create an incision line on the upper eyelid, so it will leave a thin scar. While non-incisional double eyelid surgery will create a knot for every 2-5 milimeters. It will not leave a scar but it will create a fold on upper eyelid. Incisional method will have permanent effect, yet non-incisional method might be loosen.

Incisional double eyelid is suggested when there is a lot of fat on upper eyelid, big amount of of loose skin and when patient wants to create a firm double eyelid result.

Non-incisional double eyelid is suggested when patient has a little fat on upper eyelid, small amount of loose skin and when patient wants to create a soft and natural double eyelid result.

The scar will be on the upper eyelid and it will be very thin. When you open your eyes, it will not be seen, because it will be hidden inside the double eyelid fold. When you close your eyes, a thin and faded line will be seen. For the first 3 months, it might look red and thick, however after a few time, it fades and becomes thinner.

Once you finished surgery, you will be prescribed an ointment. Please keep applying the ointment on the surgical area to keep it moist and for maximum recovery.
